Pale Green vintage Langley retro jug

Description

Lovely large pale green vintage Langley jug. It would have most likely been used as a milk jug as it is a large jug with a very simple utilitarian design/  The jug probably date to the late 1940s or 1950s.  It has a slightly mottled finish and a brighter green interior. This charming vintage jug stands 17cms high and is in good vintage condition.  It has the traditional Langley windmill back stamp on the base.

The Langley pottery was established by James Calvert in 1865. Back then they produced unglazed domestic pottery and artware.  Langley went into partnersship with Albert Lovat in 1883 by Albert Lovatt and John Lovatt, and then they traded as Calvert and Lovatt. After Calvert’s retirement in 1895, the business became known as Lovatt & Lovatt manufacturing bricks, salt glaze stoneware and ornamental pottery. In 1959 Bourne’s acquired Lovatt’s Potteries Ltd and then closed the brickworks and salt glaze stoneware section. They raised the quality and geared more towards ornamental pottery products and called it Langley pottery. The pottery at Langley was closed in 1982.

In 1975 Denbyware and Langley Pottery were combined into one operation called Denby Tableware which of course is a very well name brand of retro and vintage tableware.
